How to Root Google Pixel

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL are very powerful Devices these days. As the Google have made a lot of Security on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, it’s not that easy to Root it. But still the developers have come up with a systemless Root method for the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, which is a bit harder than the usual Rooting. Why Rooting Google Pixel or Pixel XL is hard means, Google have removed the recovery partition which is used in most of the Rooting methods and as well as installing Custom ROMs.

Regardless of thinking have they found to do it, and will it work? I tried out and it was really successful for me. And according to that I have made up this tutorial for you to, make it with your Google pixel.

Here I begin……..

 

Things you should know before starting

  • Rooting your Google Pixel or Pixel XL will void your warranty as usual. Also you have Root your device on your own risk
  • This Rooting guide down below here, is written is based on the windows version ADB, if you are using any other OS, the steps could be a bit different.
  • Install ADB Suite on your PC before you begin
  • Make a complete back up of your Device
  • This procedure down below is only for Google Pixel and Pixel XL, don’t try this method for any other Android Devices
  • You also need a USB Drive and a USB OTG to USB-C adapter. As the files has to be loaded from a different Storage.

How to Root Google Pixel and Pixel XL

To Root Google Pixel and Pixel XL you have some procedures, starting from unlocking the Bootloader, installing custom recovery and finally flashing with SuperSu to gain the Root access.

Let’s start….

Required Files

When downloading the required tools, excluding dePixel8 (for Verizon device only) download all the files for both the Verizon and non-Verizon Devices. Also download these files on your PC.

  1. Download SuperSu
  2. Download both the TWRP Recovery .img and .Zip files
    TWRP for Google Pixel
    TWRP for Google Pixel XL
  3. Download dePixel8
    (This is only for Verizon Device)

Enable USB Debugging mode

On your Google Pixel or Pixel XL

  • Go to Settings > About Phone and tap pn the Build number for 7 times, it will show you are a developer
  • Go Settings > Developer options and turn on USB Debugging mode here.
  • Now plug in your Google Pixel or Pixel XL into the PC using the USB cable. (an Original USB is cable is recommended)

Unlocking the Bootloader on Verizon Google Pixel or Pixel XL (Verizon)

  1. Copy the dePixel8 you downloaded, from your PC to the ADB folder on the Google Pixel or Pixel XL
  2. Now open command window on the ADB folder.
    (while holding the shift, right click anywhere on the folder and select Open command window)
  3. In the command prompt, enter the below commands in order one after another by pressing enter
     adb push dePixel8 /data/local/tmp
    
     adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/dePixel8
    
     adb shell /data/local/tmp/dePixel8
  4. Now your Google Pixel or Pixel XL should reboot into the Bootloader mode
  5. When your Google Pixel or Pixel XL enters Bootloader mod, again type it the below command in the command prompt.
     fastboot oem unlock
  6. Now follow the on screen instructions to complete the procedures to unlock the Bootloader on your Verizon Google Pixel or Pixel XL

So, that’s how you unlock the Bootloader if you have a Verizon Google Pixel or Pixel XL.

 

Unlocking the Bootloader on non-Verizon Google Pixel or Pixel XL (non-Verizon)

  1. Open the ADB folder on your PC.
  2. Open command prompt in the ADB folder.
    (while holding the shift, right click anywhere on the folder and select Open command window)
  3. Now type in the below command in the command prompt and press enter
     adb reboot bootloader
  4. This will reboot your Google Pixel or Pixel XL into Bootloader mode
  5. Now type in the below command into the command window
     fastboot oem unlock
  6. Now follow the on screen instructions to complete the procedures to unlock the Bootloader on your Verizon Google Pixel or Pixel XL

So, that’s how you can unlock the Bootloader if you have a non-Verizon Google Pixel or Pixel XL.

The bootloader on your Pixel or Pixel XL should now be unlocked. Unlocking the bootloader should have wiped your phone, so don’t forget the reboot your Google Pixel or Pixel XL normally to enable USB debugging again.

Flashing the TWRP Recovery and Rooting Google Pixel or Pixel XL (both the Verizon and non-Verizon)

  1. Connect USB drive into the PC
  2. Copy TWRP Recovery.zip and SuperSu.zip files into the USB Drive. (do not copy the file into a folder, just copy it on to the USB Drive)
  3. Copy TWRP Recovery.img file into ADB folder and rename it as twrp
  4. Now again enable USB Debugging mode on your Google Pixel or Pixel XL. (As I mention before)
  5. Then unplug the USB Drive from the PC and plug in the Device via the USB cable
  6. Open command window in the ADB folder
    (while holding the shift, right click anywhere on the folder and select Open command window)
  7. Type in the below command into the command prompt and press enter
     adb reboot bootloader
  8. The Device will enter Bootloader mode, now type the following command in the command prompt. It will reboot your Device in to TWRP Recovery mode.
     fastboot boot twrp.img
  9. When it’s done. Now remove the Phone from the PC and plug in the prepared USB Drive into the Phone using a USB OTG adapter.
  10. If the encryption menu comes up, just click cancel and countinue.
  11. Now swipe to allow modification
  12. Click mount and select the USB OTG option
  13. Tap on select storage button Select the USB OTG
  14. Now tap back to get to the Main menu and click install
  15. Select the twrp.zip here to flash your Device. (the file that you copied to the USB drive)
  16. Swipe the Swipe to Confirm Flash to begin flashing the file on your Device.
  17. When it is done, click back and then click reboot and select Recovery to boot into newly flashed Recovery.
  18. When the phone enters recovery mode, click on the mount and select the OTG option again.
  19. Now click Select Storage and select the OTG option again.
  20. And then click back to get to the main menu of the recovery.
  21. Now click install here and select SuperSU.zip to install it on your Device.
  22. Swipe in the Swipe to Confirm Flash to begin flashing SuperSU on your Device
  23. When the SuperSU is flashed, reboot your Device by clicking Reboot.
  24. Wait until the device boot up normally and remove the USB Drive from the Phone.

That’s it, now you should be successfully Root your Google Pixel or Pixel XL with a working TWRP custom recovery on it and you will see the SuperSU in the APP menu.
